Discussion Forum 3 - Ethical Leadership and Purpose

Q Take the GVV "Personal Professional Profile". Answer all the questions honestly. In the first parts of your initial Discussion forum post address the following questions: 1. What were your responses to Question 7? What action or actions did you say you would "very likely" take given a values conflict with the company you work for? Reflect and discuss why you choose those action/s. 2. What was your response to Question 14? Share what you believe is your definition of business purpose and how it relates to the GVV frameworks and your future career. Read the GVV II Reading titled "A Personal Struggle with Success". Think hard about the situation faced by this Executive and how his views on values in the workplace were shaped over his career. In the rest of your initial post answer the following questions related to this executive's experiences and how they impact your thoughts. 3. What do you think of his view that “The higher I’ve gone in my career, the more limited and pressured I often feel with regard to my values.”? Do you agree or disagree? What are the implications of this perspective for you and your career? 4. Finally, the important question he asks at the end of this reading: What kinds of changes may be necessary – at the 1) systemic (societal); 2) organizational and 3) personal levels – to support those who want to succeed in business and still be consistent with their values? Table 9.1 in your text and the associated narrative on p. 240 presents an ethical turn-around at a British Utility Company. After reading about Severn Trent Water, consider and discuss what role you would be willing to play as an ethical leader trying to turn around an investment firm like the one described by the businessman in "A Personal Struggle with Success". Would the change mechanisms taken by Severn Trent be enough or would other actions be necessary?

. My responses to Question 7 had been that I would very likely handle the stress about the conflicting values of my company where I work. This is because I would not be able to change the conflicting values of my company. It would be useless trying to do that. I would also very likely look for another job because of the chances of me resigning from the job any time in future.
